8:52 a.m., July 13, 2009----Lawrence White has been named vice president and general counsel for the University of Delaware, it was announced Monday by UD President Patrick Harker. White's appointment is effective July 13.
The vice president and general counsel is the University's chief legal officer, overseeing all legal affairs and services at UD.
Working with the president, the Board of Trustees and UD officials on law-related and policy-making issues affecting the University, the vice president and general counsel also will be involved in a variety of areas including litigation, compliance, risk management, internal audit, employment and business and commercial transactions.
"Larry White is an excellent addition to the UD community,” Harker said. “With more than three decades of experience as a lawyer representing colleges and universities, Larry will be of invaluable aid in conducting legal research and working with outside counsel on a wide variety of matters."
White said he was delighted to be part of the team at UD: “Everywhere I go in higher education circles, people are talking about the University of Delaware and Pat Harker. The school is on a roll, and I'm delighted to be part of the team.”
Noting that the best places to work are the country's leading state universities, White said the mission of a school like UD resonates.
“The state universities are deeply integrated into the social, economic, political and cultural lives of the states they're located in, and they make a difference in the lives of the students who attend. It's a privilege to be at the University of Delaware,” he said.
White previously served as university counsel at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and as deputy general counsel at the University of Virginia. He also served as counsel to Morgan State University and the Board of Regents of the University of Maryland System.
As president of Lawrence White Consulting, White has been involved with legal and managerial projects for colleges and universities nationwide.
An adjunct member of the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, White has also taught at Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. In 2002, he received the William G. Whitney Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching, awarded annually to affiliated faculty members in the Wharton School.
White, who earned a bachelor's degree cum laude from Harvard University in 1971, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1975. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1971-77.
After serving as a legislative assistant and subcommittee counsel in the Office of U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston from 1975-77, White was an associate attorney for Peabody, Rivlin, Lambert & Meyers in Washington, D.C. He also served as assistant attorney general in the Educational Affairs Division in the Office of the Maryland Attorney General in Baltimore.
He is a longtime member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, which he has served as board member and officer.
White is a frequent speaker, lecturer, writer and consultant on higher education issues.
