12:41 p.m., Jan. 25, 2010----University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Bernard Muir has been appointed by the NCAA to the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
Muir, who joined the University of Delaware staff this past summer, will serve on the board through 2012. He replaces former NCAA appointee Gene Smith, assistant vice president and director of athletics at Ohio State University, who stepped down.
“I'm excited and honored to be joining the board of directors of such a prestigious organization,” said Muir, who is the first UD athletics staff member to serve on the board. “I've certainly had a passion for the game of basketball my entire life and I'm looking forward to serving with the other members of the USA Basketball board to help promote and advance the sport throughout our country and the world.”
Currently in his first year at the head of the Blue Hens athletic department, Muir served four years (2005-09) as the director of athletics at Georgetown University. Prior to Georgetown, Muir spent five years at the University of Notre Dame, first as associate athletic director for student welfare and development (2000-03), then as senior associate athletic director for student welfare and development (2003-04) and in his final year (2004-05) as deputy director of athletics for administration and facilities.
The Gainesville, Fla., native began his career in college athletics as a four-year letter winner on the men's basketball team at Brown University, graduating in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior and management. In 1992 he earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
He spent one year (1990-91) as an athletics administrative assistant at Butler University and worked for the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship as an assistant director (1992-98) and director of operations (1998-2000).
Jerry Colangelo chairs the 2009-12 USA Basketball board of directors, which also includes: NBA appointees Kim Bohuny, vice president, basketball operations international; and Stu Jackson, executive vice president, basketball operations; NCAA appointees Chris Plonsky, University of Texas women's athletics director and senior associate athletic director of men's/women's athletics external services; and Kevin Weiberg, chief executive officer, iHoops; scholastic director Robert Kanaby, executive director, National High School Federation; at-large independent director Billy Hunter, executive director of the National Basketball Players Association; national organizations representative Rod Seaford, former national chairman of AAU boys basketball; and athlete representatives Teresa Edwards, a five time Olympian and four time Olympic gold medalist, and Steve Smith, Olympic (2000) and world championship (1994) gold medalist. Past USA Basketball president Val Ackerman rounds out the board as an ex officio.
Based in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Basketball is a nonprofit organization and the national governing body for men's and women's basketball in the United States. As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.
