Jones, who earned his doctorate at Yale University in 1970, began three decades of service to national psychological organizations in 1980 as chairperson of the American Psychological Association (APA) program committee. His work culminated in 2004 as SPSSI's 68th president and throughout these years, he was a member of numerous committees.

In announcing the award, SPSSI noted that Jones' “research and service epitomize the values of SPSSI. In the SPSSI tradition he is a scholar who cares deeply about making a difference through policy and service to others... His vision, leadership, and commitment to core SPSSI concerns and values have helped to make SPSSI the successful organization it is today.”

Jones has dedicated a great portion of his life to the advancement of African-American psychologists. In 2004, during his presidential year, he helped organize the SPSSI stand-alone convention in Washington, D.C., which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education case that deemed "separate but equal" educational opportunities unconstitutional.

In addition to SPSSI, Jones directed the Minority Fellowship Program of the APA for more than 30 years, was the affirmative action officer for more 20 years, and led the public interest directorate for four years.

Aside from this Distinguished Service Award, Jones has received a Distinguished Psychologist Award from the Association of Black Psychologists, the Kurt Lewin Memorial Award from SPSSI, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Division 45 of the APA.
