2:50 p.m., Jan. 21, 2010----People around the world are reaching out to assist the citizens of Haiti as they struggle to overcome the suffering and destruction caused by the Jan. 12 earthquake. Thousands are dead, families have been separated and children have been orphaned. Those lucky enough to escape injury face the rising threat of disease and death while awaiting relief efforts and basic essentials.
“The devastation in Haiti is extraordinary, and the people there are in dire need,” UD President Patrick Harker said. “At a time like this, I'm struck by the remarkable generosity of the UD community, especially its students who have begun organizing fundraisers and rallying around this cause with a palpable sense of urgency, energy and purpose. I thank everyone for their efforts, and I encourage students, faculty and staff to continue doing what they can to help the people of Haiti, who have lost so very much.”
“It's a tragic situation and many of our employees and students have expressed a wish to help the victims of Haiti's immediate needs, however in the following months as the people of Haiti begin the rebuilding process they will need even more help,” said J.J. Davis, vice president for administration. “We are providing employees and students with the following list of organizations whose efforts are to provide relief to the people of Haiti. Please consider contacting one of these or the many other organizations that are supporting the efforts in Haiti.”
The University Religious Leaders' Organization has issued the following statement: "On behalf of the Religious and Spiritual Life community at the University of Delaware, we share our heartfelt prayers, sympathy and deep concern for the people of Haiti and all those who have been affected by the disaster. We continue to pray for all those whose lives have been lost, for their family and friends and all those who mourn, for those who are waiting to hear from loved ones, for all those who are injured, for the health care, relief and rescue workers and for all the Haitian people. We will be joining local, national and international relief efforts in any way that we can throughout the months and years of recovery ahead. We support the rescue and relief efforts that remain the focus of the global community and encourage financially supporting reliable relief efforts that are active in Haiti."
Student action
UD students are currently organizing efforts to raise awareness and money for the people of Haiti.
Two students, Marc Paulo Guzman and Daniel Schroeder, are selling T-shirts, emblazoned with the message “Hope for Haiti,” and proceeds from the sale will go to the American Red Cross. Information about the project is available on their blog.
As plans for other student initiatives become finalized, they will be reported on UDaily.
Members of the University community are encouraged to consider volunteering time, participating in a blood drive or providing a monetary contribution to help those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
