8:07 a.m., Jan. 20, 2010----Beginning Jan. 20, all students at the University of Delaware can use an exciting new service -- Google Apps @UDel.edu.
Using their UDelNet IDs (udel.edu e-mail addresses) and passwords, students can now use Google's advanced e-mail interface, Gmail, for their University e-mail -- and can also use the entire Google Apps for Education software suite.
UD Information Technologies (IT) and Google have made the new service available as a pilot program since November 2009, during which time more than 200 students have taken advantage of this opportunity. IT has now opened Google Apps @UDel.edu to any UD student who would like to move.
With just a UDelNet ID and password, a UD student can instantly use the full set of Google Applications for Education:
- Gmail - udel.edu e-mail, communicating with on- and off-campus correspondents;
- Google Calendar - organizing schedules;
- Google Docs - creating and sharing documents (formatted text, spreadsheets, presentations);
- Google Sites - creating and sharing Web pages; and
- Google Talk - communicating with others via text, voice, and video messaging.
Gmail offers large storage capacity (more than 94 times the current UD e-mail quota), voice and video chat, mobile access, advanced spam and virus protection, and a powerful search. Further, students will retain their @udel.edu e-mail addresses after they graduate and can continue to use Gmail to access that e-mail.
By the end of the spring semester, all UD students will use Gmail at Google Apps @UDel.edu to read, write, and archive all of their udel.edu e-mail. Current students will keep their udel.edu e-mail addresses, but access to their mail will be through Gmail. Starting with the spring semester, all new UD student e-mail accounts will be on Google Apps @UDel.edu.
Students who are ready to start reading their e-mail at Google Apps @UDel.edu now can log into UD's Network Page and select “Change to Google Apps @UDel.edu for your UD e-mail.”
More information is available at the IT Google Apps @UDel.edu Web site. This site contains information on each of the packages included in Google Apps @UDel.edu; help with the steps to make the transition; and extensive, frequently updated FAQs.
