The blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Trabant University Center, and is of extra importance because recent snowstorms have caused closings by the Blood Bank of Delmarva. In a statement, Blood Bank representatives said the closings have meant more than 700 donor appointments were lost. While the Blook Bank has been able to fill every order from the 17 hospitals it serves, backup supplies are low for some types and must be replenished.

"This is not an emergency appeal but we do want to alert the public that there is a considerable need for blood donors -- especially platelet and Type O whole blood donors -- throughout this week and next so that we can replenish supplies that will support hospital needs," said Bob Travis, Blood Bank president and CEO. "Those who are able to travel safely to our donor centers are urged to do so."

The Feb. 17 blood drive on campus is sponsored by Alpha Kappa Psi, Sigma Phi Delta, Psi Chi and Theta Chi.

Those interested in giving blood should call the Blood Bank of Delmarva for an appointment. The number is (302) 737-8400 or 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.

To give blood, donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors are encouraged to eat a good meal within three hours of donating.
