3:11 p.m., Aug. 21, 2009----This summer I am an intern in object conservation at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Under the supervision of Head of Object Conservation Shelley Sturman (WUDPAC alumnus) and Object Conservator Katy May, I have been assisting with the annual maintenance of the outdoor sculptures in the National Gallery of Art's sculpture garden, including Puellae by Magdalena Abakanowicz and Typewriter Eraser, Scale X by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. The treatments include washing, removing debris and waxing the sculptures. This maintenance ensures that the sculptures remain in good condition for the public to enjoy year after year and presents a great opportunity to interact with the public and teach them about conservation.

Indoors, I have been doing a minor treatment on a Martin Johnson sculpture from the Vogel Collection, which will be a part of The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: 50 Works for 50 States project.

Additionally, I have been assisting Object Conservator Dylan Smith and Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Objects Conservation Simona Cristanetti (WUDPAC alumnus) with the cleaning portions of their treatments of two Renaissance marble sculptures, one a sculpture of Young St. John the Baptist by Gianfrancesco Susini and the other, Ciborium for the Sacrament by Desiderio da Settignano.

I am gaining a wide range of experience at the National Gallery of Art by treating these diverse objects and working with the knowledgeable conservation staff.
