2:29 p.m., Aug. 21, 2009----During the summer of 2009, I am interning for eight weeks in the conservation department at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia. I am working primarily with the sculpture conservators at the galleries on several different exciting projects.

One overriding project is to help prepare artworks for an upcoming exhibition at the galleries, opening in the beginning of August, which is composed of modern indigenous-type artworks. The objects are mostly constructed of different types of fiber and include baskets, bags, belts and headdresses, ceremonial objects and fishing tools.

Other treatment projects that I am working on include a modern steel sculpture that needs to have a coating removed, be polished and recoated, and a modern fiber sculpture that needs to be stabilized and undergo loss compensation.

This internship is a great opportunity for me to gain experience with different types of modern artworks and to learn about different techniques and materials used by conservators in Australia. In addition, it's been very helpful for the busy conservation department at the galleries to have me here helping with the many projects they have going on.
