A Tony Soprano/Al Capone-like figure, Arturo Ui is a crazy but charismatic local gangster in 1930s Chicago bent on gaining power first in the Windy City's vegetable trade and then the world. Brecht created Arturo Ui as a wickedly entertaining farce that is a thinly veiled parable of the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany. Using music, dance, moving sets and a multitude of characters, director Heinz-Uwe Haus creates a wild romp of mobster madness.

Multi-talented actress, Carine Montbertrand, plays the role of Arturo Ui. She says, “Our production really sweeps the audience up with the rise of this character. We involve them in such a way that they become transfixed with Ui, and then, as Brecht intended, the audience has to stop and think about how they would have reacted to such a person and situation.”

Performances run from Friday, April 30, through Sunday, May 16, with a preview performance on Thursday, April 29. Tickets are $16 - $22, with discounts for students, seniors and University of Delaware faculty and staff. Tickets can be purchased by calling the REP box office at (302) 831-2204 or in person at the Roselle Center for the Arts, 110 Orchard Rd., Newark.

Performances for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on April 29, 30 and May 1, 6, 8, 14, and 15; and at 2 p.m. on May 1, 2, 8, and 16.

Before the 2 p.m. performance on May 8 is the REP Prologue, a free and informal 20-minute presentation about the production, designed to enhance patrons' enjoyment and understanding of what they are about to experience.
