1:54 p.m., Sept. 15, 2008--Former UD faculty member Camille Brinkley Schiffman, 74, died Aug. 31, 2008, at her home in Newark, Del.

She was born Aug. 19, 1934, in Greensboro, N.C., to the late Arnold and Camille Schiffman.

Following baccalaureate studies at the University of Tennessee and graduate work at the Bank Street College of Education in New York, Schiffman began her teaching career at the Merrill-Palmer Institute (now the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute) in Detroit, Mich. Dr. Schiffman also held positions at Tufts University in Boston and the University of Georgia in Athens and did a year of study at the University of London.

Joining the University of Delaware in 1963, Dr. Schiffman taught child development courses, supervised the student teachers in the pre-school program and had major responsibility for development and administration of the pre-school as its director.

Professional endeavors for Dr. Schiffman included initiating and founding of the state chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, contributing to the development of a cooperative program with the College of Education for the certification of kindergarten teachers in the state of Delaware, and serving as a consultant to the Head Start Program for development of summer teacher training programs and evaluation of Head Start training programs at six universities.

For several years Schiffman was faculty adviser to Mortar Board Honor Society, and was chairperson of the University Faculty Committee on Student Honors. Sabbatical travel included visits to pre-schools in Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. She enjoyed working with students in many capacities during her 21 years at UD, but her greatest love was reserved for "her children" in the pre-school program.

Camille is survived by brothers, Arnold Anthony (Tony) Schiffman, Jr., and wife, Madeline; Harry Brinkley Schiffman, and wife, Lila; nephews, Arnold Anthony Schiffman III, and wife, Terrie; Harry Vance Schiffman; Lawrence Lane Schiffman, and wife, Becky. Survivors also include eight grandnieces and grandnephews; her loving caregivers "adopted granddaughter" Brandy Fowler and Rita Fitzcharles; and her beloved poodle, Baby.

Great appreciation is expressed to Bayada Nurses for their care and support.

Burial will be private in Manteo, N.C.
