4:35 p.m., Oct. 31, 2008----While U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, a University of Delaware alumnus and Democratic candidate for vice president, was speaking on the north steps of the University of Delaware's Memorial Hall on Friday morning, Oct. 31, about a dozen members of the College Republicans held a counter rally on the steps of Gore Hall.

They later formed a line stretching across the grass near a walkway on The Green, waving signs supporting Republican presidential candidate John McCain and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Bill Rivers, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, who grew up in Wilmington, Del., said that the group wanted to focus on supporting Republican candidates running for local and statewide offices in the Nov. 4 election.

“When we heard that Biden was coming, we wanted to have our own demonstration and to do it in a respectful manner,” Rivers, vice president of the College Republicans, said. “We wanted to exercise our First Amendment rights.”

Kasey Ketterer, a junior English education major, said that the group wanted to let the UD community know that "everybody on campus does not follow the Obama-Biden mania. It's also a chance to exercise our First Amendment rights.”
