5:06 p.m., Oct. 8, 2008----Alfinio Flores, the first Hollowell Professor of Mathematics Education at UD, will deliver his Inaugural Lecture, “Learning to See in Mathematics,” at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13, at the Louise and David Roselle Center for the Arts. A reception will follow the lecture.

A well-known and prolific researcher and writer in mathematics and mathematics education, Flores has been involved in projects funded by the Arizona Board of Regents, the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society Education Foundation and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

His articles have appeared in scholarly journals, most recently The International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and Mathematics Teacher. He also has written chapters in books published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Education Association. He is the author of Geometry for Parents in English and Spanish and editor of Mathematics for All: Responding to Diversity.

As a teacher, Flores has taught methods and supervised student teachers of mathematics for primary, middle and secondary schools.

Flores is a director of the School Science and Mathematics Association and is a member of the U.S. National Commission for Math Instruction, the National Research Council, Policy and Global Affairs Division, and Board on International Scientific Organizations, among other professional organizations.

Before coming to UD in 2007, Flores worked at the Ministry of Education in Mexico and taught at the University of Guanajuato, San Diego State University and most recently at Arizona State University. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from the National University of Mexico and his doctorate in mathematics education from Ohio State University.
