Rodriguez, who is a food service worker at the University, was identified from information provided by a suspect in recent home invasions, along with information from interviews of witnesses. He was taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at his house on Oct. 9. The gun used in the shooting has not been recovered, and information has been received that the gun was sold on the street the day after the shooting. Police confirmed that it was Rodriguez' intent to steal illegal drugs and money from the residents of the house where the shooting occurred.

Rodriguez has been charged with first degree attempted murder, first degree possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated menacing, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, second degree conspiracy and possession of marijuana. He is being held in default of $548,000 bond.

The student who was shot has been released from the hospital and has resumed everyday activities.

According to Newark Police Chief Paul Tiernan, "Officers from all divisions of the Newark Police Department have worked together to solve the serious incidents of crime that recently occurred. Their continuing efforts have improved the safety of University students and citizens of Newark."

Anyone with information about the location of the gun or any other facts in the investigation should contact Detective Fred Nelson at (302) 366-7110, ext. 136.
