UD figure skaters win competition at Cornell

2:09 p.m., Nov. 20, 2008----It was a moment that UD”s Collegiate Figure Skating Club team had been waiting for since 2002. For the first time in six years, the team skated its way to first place at the East Coast competition at Cornell University this month, edging out Cornell, Boston University and Dartmouth, which has been first in the country for six years. There were 10 schools participating.

“The team earned 100 points with Cornell coming in second with 87 points so it was an impressive win, and we were very excited,” said team vice president Kandis Kovalsky.

The skaters perform individually and their scores are tallied at the end of the competition to determine the winner. The Eastern teams have three competitions, and the top three teams in the East go to the nationals. The University of Delaware will host the next East Coast competition Feb. 15.

Those skaters placing in the top five in their events included:

  • Elyse Metelka 1st, Kathleen Westmoreland 3rd, Anne Martin 4th, preliminary program;
  • Allison Van Leer 4th, juvenile program;
  • Rachel Diehm 1st, novice long program;
  • Jordan Hartey 4th, junior long program;
  • Krista Brockway 1st, Julie Lapatha 4th, senior long test track;
  • Jazmyn Manzouri 1st, senior championship;
  • Samantha Riddle 2nd, Michelle Colucci 4th, intermediate short program;
  • Jess Dross 4th, junior short program;
  • Kandis Kovalsky 1st, Kristin Zinsmeister, 4th, senior short program;
  • Melissa Pearl 1st, Jazmyn Manzouri 2nd, preliminary dance;
  • Kim Holtzthum 1st, Kristen Zinsmeister 2nd, juvenile dance;
  • Samantha Penn 2nd, intermediate dance;
  • Kandis Kovalsky 3rd, novice dance;
  • Lindsay Cohen 3rd, senior dance;
  • Marissa Marschall 1st, Lindsay Cohen 2nd, Andrea Varraux 3rd, gold dance; and
  • Marissa Marschall 1st, Andrea Varraux 3rd, international dance.

Other team members are Kristen Barbour, Courtney Bohen, Whitey Hauspurg, Lily Jaffie-Shupe, Alex Lahurd, Jenn Milton, Jessica O'Hara, Leslie Salzberg and Lauren Wlazelek.

Melissa Pearl is president of the UD Collegiate Figure Skating Club, and the coaches are Joel McKeever and Scott Gregory.
