4:25 p.m., Nov. 5, 2008----Funeral services for Zenobia Lawrence Hikes, UD alumna and former assistant to the vice president for student life at the University of Delaware, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, in Wilmington, Del.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the service will include remembrances from Charles Steger, president of Virginia Tech; Audrey Manley, former president of Spelman College; and Roland Smith, former UD vice president and mentor to Hikes during her tenure at the University. A reception from 2:30-4 p.m. at the Blue & Gold Club will follow the service.
Dr. Hikes served as associate director of admissions at UD from 1992-96 and as assistant to the vice president for student life from 1996-99. She earned her doctorate in educational leadership, with an emphasis on administration and policy, from UD in 1998.
In 2005, Hikes was named vice president for student affairs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. After the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, she organized Virginia Tech's convocation ceremony, which was broadcast around the world.
