3:15 p.m., March 25, 2009----The University of Delaware has won 18 awards in the Delaware Press Association (DPA) 2009 Communications Contest, the association has announced.

The honors include 13 first-place awards, two second-place awards and three honorable mentions, for work that encompasses news and feature articles, press releases, publications, Web sites, posters, banners, reports and brochures.

The work was produced during 2008 by staff members in the Office of Communications and Marketing (OCM), Marine Public Education and the Center for Disabilities Studies.

The DPA, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women since 1977, is a network of more than 100 journalists, graphic designers, broadcasters, public relations specialists and others in the communications field.

“We're very pleased that the Delaware Press Association has recognized the outstanding work of so many individuals who collaborate with others across campus to get the word out about the great things that are happening at the University of Delaware,” said David Brond, UD vice president for communications and marketing. “Communicating effectively about the University's initiatives and accomplishments plays a key role in enhancing our national and international prominence.”

The DPA first-place awards for work produced by OCM were in these categories: Individual achievement in print or broadcast, for the “Extreme 2008: A Deep-Sea Adventure” multimedia production, by Tracey Bryant, David Barczak and Pam Donnelly;
four-color magazine, for the UD Messenger, by Molly Chappell and Ann Manser; single-sheet poster, for the introduction of trayless dining in campus dining halls, by Kathy Wheatley; feature article written for the Web, about an anthropology class taught simultaneously with students at UD and in Malaysia, by Sue Moncure; and news or feature press release, for research about women and knee-replacement surgery, by Tracey Bryant.

The first-place awards for work produced by Marine Public Education were in these categories: Online newsletter, for At Sea, by Elizabeth Boyle, Lisa Tossey, Tamara Beeson and Kimberly Doucette; news article written for the Web, about the College of Marine and Earth Studies' TIDE summer camp for high school students, by Boyle; radio commercial or campaign, for the “Sea Talk” public service announcements, by Boyle, Tossey, Ron Ohrel, Doucette and Wendy Carey; community or institutional relations, for the 2009 College of Marine and Earth Studies/Delaware Sea Grant desk calendar, by Tossey, Beeson, Boyle and Ohrel; one- to three-color brochure, for Coast Day's “Coastal Solution Passport,” by Tossey, Beeson, Ohrel, Boyle and Trevor Metz; four-color brochure, for the College of Marine and Earth Studies brochure/folder, by Ohrel, Beeson and Boyle; multiple news or feature press releases on one topic, about Coast Day, by Boyle; and banner, for Coast Day, by Beeson and Boyle.

Second-place awards went to Marine Public Education staff members for the external annual report Sea Grant Reporter, by Boyle, Beeson, Tossey, Ohrel and Doucette and for a single-sheet poster for Coast Day, by Beeson and Boyle.

A first-place award also went to Center for Disabilities Studies staff, where Michele Sands was recognized in the external annual reports category.

Earning honorable mention from the DPA were entries from OCM staff in the categories of news reporting in a general or specialized publication, for an article about research on the nature of glass, by Diane Kukich, also of the College of Engineering; feature article written for the Web, for an article about research on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, by Jerry Rhodes; and four-color brochure for the College of Engineering's brochure, by Christian Derr.

In addition, a book published by the University of Delaware Press and co-edited by alumna Billie Travalini and Professor Emerita of English Fleda Brown, On the Mason-Dixon Line: An Anthology of Contemporary Delaware Writers, won a first-place award for book editing.
