2:09 p.m., June 1, 2009----Barbara Sinquefield Izard, former member of the University of Delaware faculty and co-founding director of the Bacchus Players at UD, died peacefully on April 13.

Ms. Izard was the wife of Carroll E. Izard, Trustees Distinguished Professor of Psychology.

She was born May 9, 1926, in Gulfport, Miss., and grew up in Hazlehurst, where her father was employed by Southern Bell Telephone.

An accomplished pianist, she received a bachelor of music degree from Yale University in 1948. In 1950 she was awarded a master of music from Syracuse University. A versatile artist, she branched out into theatre with apprenticeships and course work at the Cleveland Play House and Vanderbilt University. She resided for periods in Paris and Moscow, where she studied French Theatre and the Stanislavsky Method.

Ms. Izard was the senior author of "Requiem for a Nun: On Stage and Off," and co-authored several papers with her husband. Using theatre techniques, she team-taught the course, "Human Emotions."

Prior to her work in Delaware, she was very active in college and community theatre in Nashville for 20 years. In Nashville, she was an instructor in drama at Belmont University and at Aquinas College. She composed the songs "Merry Christmas Is the Nicest Hello," "A Child's Prayer" and the children's song cycle, "Ten Minutes with a Four-Year-Old."

Ms. Izard was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark and a member of the community of Chambers Rock Farm, Landenberg, Pa., since 1976.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Carroll E. Izard, and their three children, Carroll E. Izard Jr. (and wife Karen) of Syracuse, N.Y.; Camille Izard Morris (and husband Terry) of Dayton, Ohio; and Ellen Ashley Izard (and partner Sandy Harrill) of Philadelphia; and grandchildren, Connor Wesley Izard and Flynn James Izard of Syracuse, N.Y.; and Olivia West Morris and Alexandra Carroll Morris of Dayton, Ohio.
