8:07 a.m., Jan. 26, 2009----Galen Giaccone, a University of Delaware student and the reigning Miss Delaware, won the preliminary talent competition and finished in the top 15 in the 2009 Miss America Pageant held Saturday in Las Vegas.

Giaccone, 20, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences who hopes to become a dental surgeon, won a $2,000 scholarship for her victory in the preliminary talent competition. She won for her piano performance of “El Cubanchero.”

Giaccone, who was crowned Miss Delaware in June, reached the top 15 in the finals, broadcast Saturday on TLC.

The title Miss America was won by Katie Stam of Indiana.
