Under the artistic direction of Xiang Gao, the internationally renowned UD faculty violinist, the Master Players Concert Series serves as a vital cultural resource.

Season after season, the extremely successful concert series has brought many of the world's most established classical musicians to Delaware.

On March 13, the Master Players Concert Series is honored to be one of the select concert presenters as the Guarneri String Quartet - Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley on violin, Michael Tree on viola and Peter Wiley on cello -- embarks upon its final tour after 45 years as one of the world's most revered string quartets.

The concert program includes Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 74 No. 3 “The Rider;” Zoltan Kodaly's String Quartet Op. 10, No. 2; and Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F Major.

The Guarneri String Quartet is “among the most revered and enduring ensembles of its kind in the world,” according to National Public Radio.

They have circled the globe numerous times since the group was formed in 1964, playing in the most prestigious halls around the world, while continuing their residency at the University of Maryland, where the players are on the faculty.

The Guarneri Quartet has been universally lauded. “What they do goes beyond playing. The foursome floods you with insights É a love and admiration for the music and its creator. As players, they exude incredible energy,” says the Palm Beach Post.

In addition to mastering the existing quartet repertoire, the group is committed to performing and popularizing works by contemporary composers, such as Richard Danielpour and Lukas Foss.

The group has been featured on many radio and television specials, documentaries and educational presentations, both in North America and abroad. A full-length film titled High Fidelity - The Guarneri String Quartet, by Allan Miller, was released in 1989. The ensemble is also the subject of various books, including Quartet: A Profile of the Guarneri Quartet, by Helen Drees Ruttencutter, and The Art of Quartet Playing: The Guarneri in Conversation with David Blum, by David Blum.

The ensemble's own Arnold Steinhardt is the author of Indivisible by Four: A String Quartet in Pursuit of Harmony.

The Guarneri players have received many accolades during their long career together. In 1982, New York City Mayor Edward Koch presented the quartet with the first New York Seal of Recognition. In 1992, they received the prestigious Award of Merit from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. In 2004, Chamber Music America presented them with its highest honor, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service award.

The March 13 concert is presented by UD's Department of Music and co-sponsored by the Performing Arts Series.
