9:35 a.m., April 15, 2009----The University of Delaware Black Student Union's annual BSU Week will be marked April 20-26 with a variety of activities and presentations.
The theme of the week is “The Five Pillars of Hip Hop.”
Activities include:
BSU elections
Black Student Union elections will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, April 20, in Room 120 Smith Hall.
Students are encouraged to run for and vote for next year's BSU executive board. Direct any questions, concerns or comments to Khalid Bilal, Shanyah Wright, or any other BSU executive board member.
A Night with Clifton Powell
The program “Black Knowledge: A Night with Clifton Powell” will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, in the auditorium of Clayton Hall.
Powell, a successful black male artist, will discuss the importance of education among males, especially young black males. Powell will be giving advice on how to stay motivated and formulate realistic goals for success.
The program will begin with a meet and greet at 5:30. Powell will be available to take pictures and sign autographs until approximately 6:30. After the meet and greet he will participate in a lecture, as well as question and answer session with the audience.
This event is free to UD students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public.
BSU Pageant
The Black Student Union will hold the annual Mr. and Miss BSU Pageant from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, in the Clayton Hall Ballroom.
The Mr. and Miss BSU Pageant is an important part of the organization, as the two individuals who win lead the BSU Community Service Committee. The pageant highlights the importance of academics and making a difference in the community.
Door open at 6:45 p.m., and admission is $2 for UD students, faculty and staff and $5 for the general public.
The pageant will be hosted by UD's Tiphane Purnell (BSU treasurer), Brent Gaines (BSU president) and Power 99FM's DJ Doc B.
The Spirit of Hip Hop
A “Spirit of Hip Hop” event will be held from noon to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at the Trabant University Center patio.
BSU's goal is to provide the campus community with an event that educates people about the origins of the hip hop culture and that brings the community together. There will be several contests including an MC battle, graffiti challenge, and much more.
This event is free to UD students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public.
MS Walk
The Black Student Union will be participating in the MS Walk this year on Sunday, April 26. BSU leaders have made participation in this walk part of BSU Week and have been asking for donations. To make donations or to participate, contact BSU treasurer Tiphane Purnell at [tiphanep@udel.edu] for more information.
