The photographs, a series of scanning electron microscope images called micrographs, are part of a larger, year-long exhibit titled “The Buds and the Bees: Pollination and the Secret Lives of Plants.”

Deborah Powell, a research associate at the Bio-Imaging Center, collaborated with Longwood Gardens Visitor Program Coordinator Joe Lomicky to collect pollen samples from unique plants throughout Longwood.

Powell then created micrographs of the pollen by putting the samples under the Bio-Imaging Center's high-resolution scanning electron microscope.

“We took the resulting grayscale pollen images and used photo-editing software to pseudo color them,” said Powell.

“These micrograph images of pollen are remarkable and will reveal a hidden element to the pollination process,” said Lomicky. “This cutting-edge technology shows an unseen layer of beauty found within the flower.”
