Logging in

The terminal should already be on. If it is not, press the base-unit power button, which is located on the right side towards the back. If the monitor power indicator is not lit, press the monitor power button, which is located on the front of the monitor in the lower right corner. If the screen saver is on (the screen is dark gray), move the mouse to start your work session.

You will see a window titled "copland.udel.edu." The cursor will be resting at the "Login:" field. If it is not, press the RETURN key to move the cursor to the correct position.

  1. Type your user number or username.

  2. Press the RETURN key. The cursor will move to the "Password:" field.

  3. Type your password. For security reasons, your password will not appear on the screen.

  4. Press the RETURN key.

In a few seconds, two windows will appear on the screen: "HELP for NCD X Terminal" and "xterm." You will work in the "xterm" window.

You are now logged in to the UNIX operating system. You will see the "UNIX prompt,"

      copland.udel.edu%

This prompt indicates that the computer is ready to accept commands. You will need to press the RETURN key after any command (unless specifically noted otherwise) to send the command to the computer.

If your X terminal fails to respond

If your X terminal fails to respond (you cannot move the cursor or execute commands), you must reboot the system. To reboot,

  1. Hold down the STOP/L1 key (on the left side of the keyboard) and press the A key.

    You will see the message

      8-bit color Boot Monitor
      >

The cursor will be at the ">" prompt.

  2. Type

      bt

    and press the RETURN key.

Wait while the terminal reboots. When you see the Copland login window, log in again.

Identifying and selecting an active window

You may have more than one window open on your screen at a time; however, only one of these windows can be "active" at a time. You can identify the active window on your screen by the blue-green border around it. Any commands you issue will be effective o nly in the active window.

To make a window active, move the mouse cursor into the window. Click the left or right mouse button. The border of the window will change color (to blue-green).

Choosing a larger or smaller font

If the printed characters on the screen are too small or too large, you can change their size.

  1. Move the cursor into the window that contains the text you want to change. Hold down the CONTROL key and press the right mouse button. Release the CONTROL key.

You will see a list of options.

  2. While holding down the mouse button, move the cursor to select the font size you want.

  3. Release the mouse button.

Accessing and selecting Root Menu options

The "Root Menu" contains commands to start connections to other systems and to log out. You will need to start an x-session on Strauss to use most application software other than mail programs, news readers and Web browsers. To access the "Root Menu,"

  1. Move the mouse cursor to the background (the area behind any window).

  2. Press and hold down the right mouse button. The "Root Menu" will appear.

To select any of the options from this menu, while still holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor to the option you want and release the mouse button.

If you do not want to choose an option, move the mouse cursor to the background (the area behind any window) and release the mouse button.

Logging out

When you finish with your UNIX session, you must quit and log out from the computer.

It is very important that you follow this procedure carefully. If you do not, you may be leaving you account vulnerable to unauthorized access.

  1. Use the mouse to move the cursor to the background (behind any window).

  2. Press and hold down the right mouse button. The "Root Menu"will appear.

  3. While still holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor to the "Quit and Logout" option and then release the mouse button.

All open windows will close, and you will be logged out of the X terminal.

PLEASE DO NOT TURN THE TERMINAL OFF.
