Overview
IT staff have upgraded and deleted some software versions, and modified
some symbolic links and executable files recently. If you have any
questions about these changes, please send a note to rdms-info@udel.edu.
The changes affect the following:
-
The "current working directory" is no longer in the default path.
This change to /usr/proto/localenv was done for security reasons.
You may see the message "command not found" after typing a.out.
One solution is to type ./a.out instead.
-
/opt/gnu/bin and /opt/gnu/man are no longer in the standard
default PATH and MANPATH.
Contents
We suggest that you use the GNU compilers in /opt/sfw.
That directory also contains debuggers and third-party libraries
including gdb and ddd.
-
/opt/gcc links to the directory containing the newest
gcc compiler that IT supports. Newer compilers may be
installed, but should be viewed as being in test mode.
-
/opt/gnu, the symbolic link to /opt/gnu2.8.1, was deleted.
-
The /opt/gnu2.8.1 software will be deleted this summer.
-
Older /opt/gcc-2x and /opt/gcc-3x versions have been deleted.
Contents
Most of the changes reflect an attempt to
standardize the names of the directories and symbolic links.
-
The most current release is version 1.4.x
-
See /usr/java*, /opt/java*, and /usr/jdk* for changes.
- Changes to symbolic links:
- /usr/j2se and /usr/j2sdk now point to /usr/java1.4
- /usr/java points to /opt/java1.4
- /usr/java1.x points to Java 1.x

We suggest that you use the new Sun compilers in the Studio 9
suite. They are more robust and work better than previous
Sun compilers, especially if you also use the IMSL Computational
Toolkit (CTT).
Contents
/opt/texlive-2004 was installed as the new default version of Tex
and LateX.
