How to Publish Information on the Web

  • Create Web Pages
  • To publish your information, you put it into a computer file with special codes to allow it to be displayed on the Web and to link to other Web documents and graphics. These special codes are called HyperText Markup Language, or HTML for short. The UD Office of Communication and Marketing offers Standards and Guidelines for publishing Web pages. You can also find information on creating Web files and preparing graphics for Web pages at the IT Web Developer Idea Center.

You can use Web publishing software (e.g., Adobe Dreamweaver or KompoZer) to create your pages. You can also use UD's HTML tutorials to learn to create Web pages using HTML.

  • Publish on the Web (Make Your Web Page Public)
  • For the world to see your Web document, the file must be located on a computer that is running a World Wide Web server.

    • UD faculty and staff can obtain space on the University's central WWW server (www.udel.edu) to publish official University information by completing the WWW Directory Request form.
    • Once your directory has been set up, follow the instructions for publishing your page.

    • Faculty, Students and student organizations can publish personal Web pages on the Copland Web server (udel.edu). Faculty and other members of the university community whose departments allow personal home pages should follow the directions for personal pages.

  • Publish and Maintain Department Web Pages
  • To set up a department web project, follow these steps:

    1. Be sure that everyone who will be on the project has activated their UDelNet account. If non-University people will be working on your Web pages, set up University UDelNet accounts for them: Go to the Help Center web page and select "Systems access forms" under "IT Services." Log in and complete the "UDelNet Account Request" form.
    2. Request a UNIX project that includes everyone who should be able to create and edit the Web pages. To do this, go to the Help Center web page, select "Systems access forms," login, and complete the "UNIX New Project Request" form.
    3. Request a Web directory: After you have been notified that your UNIX project has been set up, complete the WWW Directory Request form.
    4. Create a link to your directory to make it easier to get to your files.

If your department already has a Web page, and you've been asked to maintain it, you must first be added to the Web project. To have you added, the project director must go to the Help Center web page, select "Systems access forms," login, and complete the "UNIX Project-Add User Request" form. Once you have been added, send an e-mail message to www-dir-req@udel.edu giving the name of the directory in which the pages reside, requesting that you be given ownership of the files, and specifying your UDelNet ID.

  • Host Web pages for External Organizations

Faculty or staff may sponsor Web pages for external organizations by obtaining the endorsement of the department to which they report.
