FAQ: I use Netscape Communicator to read my e-mail. I received a warning that my e-mail (UNIX account) is over disk quota--What should I do?

You can use some features of the Netscape Messenger application to reduce your disk quota.

  1. First, empty the "Trash" folder on "mail.udel.edu." To empty the folder, from the Main Menu, select
"File | Empty Trash on mail.udel.edu."

(Note: Be sure you're emptying the "Trash" folder on "mail.udel.edu" and not on "Local Mail.")

  2. Check your Messenger preference settings to ensure that they are set correctly to work with the UD's central e-mail server.

  3. Check to make sure that you can see the message "Size" column on your Messenger screen. The "Size" column is not visible in the following graphic:
  4. If the "Size" column is not visible, click on the left-pointing arrow at the end of the line containing the word "Subject." You will see the column named "Size" appear. Click on the word "Size," hold down the mouse button, and drag the "Size" column to the right of the first column ("Subject"). Click once on the word "Size" to sort messages by size (smallest to largest).

Note: You can click on the word "Size" again to reverse the sort order. In the following graphic, you can now see the "Size" column immediately after the "Subject" column.

  5. Check for large messages. You can identify large messages by looking in the "Size" column and noting the number of bytes each message contains. The larger the number of bytes, the larger the message.

For example, if you see a message with the number "847" in the "Size" column, that message contains 847 bytes. If you see a message with the number "847KB" in the "Size" column, then that message is 1,000 times larger than the other one. (One K equals 1,000 bytes.)

  6. Delete the messages you no longer need the way you normally do.

Important: For messages you must keep, file them in the "Local Mail" folder (which is on your desktop computer and, therefore, doesn't affect your disk quota on the central mail server).

  7. Clear Netscape's disk cache (X Terminal users only)

If the disk usage command (du -ak | more) explained in step number 2 of FAQ: Using UNIX Commands to Manage Disk Quota returned many files with "netscape" or "cache" as part of the name, please use the following command to remove unnecessary files from your directory:

    \rm -r .netscape/cache/*

If you still cannot save files or you are still over your disk quota limit, exit from Netscape, log on to the Copland central e-mail server, and follow the instructions in FAQ: Using UNIX Commands to Manage Disk Quota.
