Anti-Virus Software Vendors

Many vendors provide anti-virus software for a fee or for free. Some of the vendors, listed roughly in order of how well their products combat viruses (better programs near the top of the list) are:

Dr. Solomon's Software, Inc. is the developer and distributor of Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit and security software. Their site includes:
- Virus Central, a collection of virus-related information
- Anonymous FTP their site for downloadable software
- List of Useful Links, links to sites other than theirs
DataFellows distributes F-Prot (anti-virus) and F-Secure (anti-virus and encryption) software. Their site includes:
- Computer Virus Information available on their site
- Download Center for downloading trial versions and free software
- Computer Virus Information, pointers to other web sites
IBM Corporation has an informative and well-produced antivirus online web page. Its Hype alerts! page has a clear description of common virus hoaxes.
McAfee distributes anti-virus, security, and diagnostics software as well as other products. Their site includes a Virus Info Library.
Symantec Corp. distributes Norton Anti-Virus and Symantec Anti-Virus for Macintosh.
The Symantec Antivirus Research Center includes information about Virus Hoaxes.
Central Command is the U.S. distributor for AVP (AntiViral Toolkit Pro). They are now co-developers of AntiViral Toolkit Pro, originally developed by Eugene V. Kaspersky.
Alternative Computer Solutions Ltd. is the US distributor for Sweep, Intercheck, and other products from Sophos.
ThunderBYTE develops and distributes Anti-Virus Software.
Trend Micro Inc. produces anti-virus software that provides 'gateway' virus protection. That means the software runs on a server (rather than on desktop personal computers) and checks incoming files for viruses.
Stiller Research is the author and distributor of Integrity Master.
NH&A resells (distributes) anti-virus, security & network management software from multiple vendors.

Research Organizations & Publications

NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, tracks virus information and maintains a Computer Security Resource Clearinghouse.
CIAC (Computer Incident Advisory Capability), of the US Dept. of Energy, makes MS-DOS anti-virus tools available.
Virus Bulletin is a technical journal with an excellent reputation.
The Virus Research Unit of the University of Tampere, Finland, maintains a web page with anti-virus information.
