SPSS: Macintosh with Coprocessor Version - Download Options
The entire site licensed SPSS package is composed of files from 10
diskettes. To simplify the distribution on the University of Delaware
campus, each of the diskettes' files was put into a folder; the folder
and its contents were converted into a self-extracting archive (.sea) file;
and the .sea file was converted into a binhex-compressed format (.hqx)
file for downloading via a Web browser such as Netscape.
If you do not have StuffIt Expander installed on your Mac, you will need it
and can install it
now.
This document assumes that you have already read
SPSS: Site Licensed Program, University of Delaware
and have agreed to abide by the contract with SPSS Inc.
If you have not read the agreement and registered your use
of the software,
you must do it before proceeding.
This document describes how to download the software
to your hard disk and how to download the software
to floppy diskettes. The hard disk approach is preferable if
you have sufficient free disk space. If your system is not connected
to the campus network, you may bring 10 diskettes to a public microcomputing
site or to the Technology Solutions Center in 002 Smith Hall and copy the
files to diskettes in those locations.
Downloading the software to your hard disk
The goal is to retrieve 10 folders, one per original SPSS diskette,
and to move the 10 folders into a new temporary installation folder on
your hard disk..
- Create a folder named SPSStemp on your hard disk.
- For each file in the list below, click on the
filename to download the file.
- Netscape will transfer the file to your desktop, uncompress it, and
extract the archive. This results in three icons on your desktop:
- A binhex-compressed (.hqx) file with a name like Disk1.sea.hqx
(or ProStat.sea.hqx, or AdvStat1.sea.hqx)
- A self-extracting (.sea) file with a name like SPSS_Disk_1.sea
(or SPSS_Professional_Statistics.sea, or SPSS_Advanced_Statistics_1.sea)
- A folder with a name like SPSS_Disk_1 (or SPSS_Professional_Statistics,
or SPSS_Advanced_Statistics).
- Drag the folder (e.g., SPSS_Disk_1) into the SPSStemp folder.
- Drag the .hqx and .sea files to the trash and empty the trash, if you
are short on hard disk space.
- Repeat steps 3-6 for each file in the list.
Installing the software stored temporarily on your hard disk
If you have filled in the SPSS registration
form, you will be receiving a copy of the printed installation instructions
and customized license codes. To install the SPSS program, open
the SPSS_Disk_1 folder in the SPSStemp folder. Double-click the "Double-click
to install SPSS" icon and follow the printed instructions you've
received. Select the "Easy install" option instead of the "Custom
install" option. The printed instructions will remind you that you
need to install the Professional Statistics and the Advanced Statistics
modules separately after completing the Base System installation.
Downloading the software to floppy diskettes
For each of the original 10 diskettes, you need to retrieve that diskette's
files temporarily to your hard disk, do some preparation there before transferring
files to a floppy diskette, and move the files to a diskette.
- For each file in the list below, repeat the
complete set of instructions on one file before starting the next
file.
- Put a diskette in the disk drive.
- Click on the filename to download the file to your hard disk.
- Netscape will transfer the file to your desktop, uncompress it, and
extract the archive. This results in three icons on your desktop:
- A binhex-compressed (.hqx) file with a name like Disk1.sea.hqx
(or ProStat.sea.hqx, or AdvStat1.sea.hqx)
- A self-extracting (.sea) file with a name like SPSS_Disk_1.sea
(or SPSS_Professional_Statistics.sea, or SPSS_Advanced_Statistics_1.sea)
- A folder with a name like SPSS_Disk_1 (or SPSS_Professional_Statistics,
or SPSS_Advanced_Statistics).
- Double-click the folder's icon (e.g., SPSS_Disk_1).
- Change the floppy diskette's label to match the folder's name. Drag
the folder's contents (not the folder icon) to the floppy
diskette.
To be sure that you're transferring all of the files in the
folder, not just the ones that are arranged toward the top of the folder,
identify them all by clicking Edit / Select All from the menu bar.
- Drag the folder, the .sea file, and .hqx file to the trash, and empty
the trash.
- Repeat steps 2-7 for each file in the list.
Installing the software from floppy diskettes
If you have filled in the SPSS registration
form, you will be receiving a copy of the printed installation instructions
and customized license codes. To install the SPSS program, put
the SPSS_Disk_1 diskette in the diskette drive. Double-click the
"Double-click to install SPSS" icon and follow the printed
instructions you've received. Select the "Easy install" option
instead of the "Custom install" option. The printed instructions
will remind you that you need to install the Professional Statistics and
the Advanced Statistics modules separately after completing the Base System
installation.
