Nutrition and Dietetics Internship Program

Type: Teaching and Learning - Reflective Journaling, Assessment

Purpose: This portfolio spans two semesters, involving 4 courses, and about 34 interns in the Nutrition and Dietetics graduate distance education program. The students will participate in 4 rotations: three are designated, one is an elective or rotation of choice. Students need evidentiary support that they have mastered all 46 competencies in their program for accreditation.

Two matrices were implemented: a reflective journaling matrix and a rotation summary matrix. This project was one of our first pilots beginning in the 2007/2008 academic year.

Comments: It was imperative for the Nutrition and Dietetics program that they increase the passing scores for the National Dietetics Internship exam. After implementing the portfolio, pass rates increased to 79% from July 1, 2007 - December 31, 2007 and 85% from January 1, 2008 to June 30, 2008. In the past, pass rates had been in the low 70's and sometimes in the 60's.
