How to Connect Your Windows 98 Computer to the UD Network Through a Modem

To connect your Windows 98 computer to the UD network through a modem, you will need to do the following:


Setting up PPP with Windows 98 Using the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard (IE4)

Note: Have your original Windows 98 CD or disks handy before you add software because the computer may ask you to insert the CD or disks.

  1. Modem Setup
  2. Make sure your modem is set up and working properly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Set up Windows 98
  4. After you set up Windows 98, follow these steps:

    1. Select the "Start" menu.
    2. Click "Programs."
    3. Click "Internet Explorer."
    4. Click "Connection Wizard."
    5. Select "I have an existing Internet account," then click "Next."
    6. Accept the default selection, then click "Next."
    7. Select "Connect using my phone line."
    8. Click "Next."
    9. If you have never made a connection before, select "Create a new dial up connection."
    10. Click "Next."
    11. On the "Phone Number" screen, fill in the appropriate phone number from the chart below. Be sure there is no check mark in the box beside "Dial using the area and country code:"

    13. Click "Next."
    14. Type your UNIX username and password.
    15. Click "Next."
    16. You must use advanced settings in order for the connection to work. Select "Yes."
    17. Click "Next."
    18. Select "PPP (Point to Point Protocol):"
    19. Click "Next."
    20. Select "I don’t need to type anything when logging on":
    21. Click "Next."
    22. On the "IP Address" screen, select "My Internet service provider automatically assigns me one."
    23. Click "Next."
    24. For the DNS server addresses, type
    25. 128.175.13.92
      128.175.13.74

    26. Click "Next."
    27. You may fill in any name you would like for the name of this connection, then click "Next."
    28. You do not need to set up an Internet Mail Account, Internet News Account or Internet Directory Service, so click "Next" 3 times.

    29. Click "Finish." You are now finished setting up your PPP connection.

To connect to the University's computing network, use a software application that uses the PPP connection (e.g., telnet, TNVT, Netscape, Internet Explorer). You will automatically be prompted to make the connection.


Setting up PPP with Windows 98 Using the Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard (IE5)

  1. Modem Setup

Make sure your modem is set up and working properly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. After you set up Windows 98, follow these steps:
  1. Select the "Start" menu.
  2. Click "Programs."
  3. Click "Accessories."
  4. Click "Communications."
  5. Click "Connection Wizard."
  6. Select "I want to set up my Internet account manually," then click "Next."
  7. On the next screen, select "I connect through a phone line and modem," then click "Next."
  8. You may see a screen in which you are prompted to create a new connection. If you do, select "Create a new dial up connection" then click "Next."
  9. On the "Phone Number" screen, fill in the appropriate phone number from the chart below.

  11. Be sure there is no check mark in the box beside "Dial using the area and country code." Click "Advanced:"
  12. You must use advanced settings in order for the connection to work. Select "Yes."
  13. Under "Connection Type," make sure "PPP" is selected.
  14. Under "Logon Procedure," make sure "None" is selected.
  15. Click the "Addresses" tab.
  16. Under "IP Address," make sure the radio button next to "Internet service provider automatically provides one" is selected.
  17. Under "DNS Server Address," click the radio button next to "Always use the following."
  18. Fill in the following information for the DNS servers:
  19. Primary DNS Server:
    128.175.13.92

    Alternate DNS Server:
    128.175.13.74

  20. Click "OK." This will return you to the screen on which you entered a phone number.
  21. Click "Next."
  22. Type your UNIX username and password as requested, and then click "Next."
  23. In the next window, type a name for the connection, for example, "University of Delaware."
  24. Click "Next."
  25. When asked if you "Wish to set up an Internet Mail Account now?", select "No."
  26. Click "Next."
  27. On the next screen, uncheck the box next to "To connect to the Internet immediately...."
  28. Click "Finish."

As the Wizard closes, the system may ask you to insert your Windows 98 CD or disks and may require you to restart your computer.

To connect to the University’s computing network, use a software application that uses the PPP connection (e.g., telnet, TNVT, Netscape, Internet Explorer). You will automatically be prompted to make the connection.


Using telnet to Connect to the Central E-mail Server

Windows 98 comes with a telnet vt100 terminal client built in.
  1. From the "Start" menu, select "Run."
  2. Type
  3. telnet copland

  4. At the "login" prompt, type your UNIX username.
  5. At the "password" prompt, type your UNIX password.


Installing Netscape Software

You will use Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) to download a copy of Netscape to your computer. Netscape is the web browser supported by the University.

Warning: Netscape is a large program and will take a long time to download. Netscape is also available on the customized CD "UD Network Connection CD for Macintosh and Windows Computers," which is sold in the University Bookstore.

  1. Click the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the desktop.
  2. Highlight "Programs."
  3. Highlight "Accessories."
  4. Highlight "Internet Tools."
  5. Highlight "Internet Explorer."
  6. In the "Address" field, type the address (URL for UD’s software distribution web site):
  7. http://www.udel.edu/sw/

  8. Press the ENTER key.
  9. Under "Connectivity, Virus Protection, and Web Software," click the "Windows" link.
  10. Click "Netscape Communicator v4.5 for Windows 95/98 and NT."
  11. Scroll down the page and click "Download Netscape Communicator for UD v4.5 for Windows 95/98 and NT."
  12. From the "File" menu, click "Save As."
  13. Choose a folder in which to save this file. Be sure you know the drive and folder name you copy the file to. The default file name is "netcust.exe".
  14. After you copy the file, exit Internet Explorer.
  15. Open "My Computer." Click the drive and folder where you saved the file.
  16. Double-click "netcust.exe" (or the name under which you saved the file).
  17. Click the "Yes" button to install Netscape on your computer.

Note: Type exit at the copland.udel.edu prompt (%) to log out of your account.

Note: Remember to disconnect from the PPP connection when you finish working on the central e-mail server. If you do not disconnect, your telephone line will be connected to the UD network, and you will not receive incoming telephone calls.
