There is growing concern over soil and water resources due to the increasing dominance of human activities in the era of rapid global change. Particularly, soil and water resources at heavily populated costal zones are susceptible to degradation caused by sea level rise induced freshwater aquifer contamination. Adaptation to these complex environmental changes and protection of soil and water resources will require a comprehensive integrated collaboration between hydrology and soil science. I am co-advised by Dr. Holly Michael at Department of Geological Sciences. First, we implement field instrumentation to investigate potential impacts of sea level rise on contaminant mobility and cycling. Second, we use modeling scenarios to understand the mechanisms and processes of groundwater salinization. Our research seeks to provide understanding of environmental impacts of seawater intrusion processes affected by sea level rise.
