Sparks Named Distinguished Professor

Dr. Donald L. Sparks, chair of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Delaware, has been named a Distinguished Professor of Soil Science in recognition of outstanding service as a teacher and scholar. Dr. Richard B. Murray, interim University Provost, made the announcement May 16.

Sparks was recommended for the appointment by the college's dean and by his colleagues, who cited him for his research contributions.

"The College of Agricultural Sciences is honored to have this recognition for one of our outstanding faculty members," says Dr. John C. Nye, dean of the college. "It is particularly appropriate that Don Sparks be honored since he brings a dedication and commitment to his research and to his students."

"Dr. Sparks' ability to challange and motivate young scientists is evident in the succesful accomplishments of his many graduate and postgraduate students," says Murray.

Sparks, who joined the university in 1979, was named chair of the department in 1989. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Sparks has many publications and has authored and edited several books. Sparks has received more than $2 million in research grants and contracts from government, academic and industrial sources.

"I deeply appreciate being named the Distinguished Professor of Soil Science. This is a wonderful honor that I will always cherish," says Sparks. "I am very proud of the growth and reputation of our soil science program."

Initial funding for this position comes from gifts to the university from the A. Palmer Corey family in Bridgeville, Del., and from Mildred M. Meridith of Newburgh, N.Y., whose gift is in memory of her late husband, John, a 1919 graduate of the College of Agricultural Sciences.

The university honored Sparks at a reception on May 19.
