Soils Science Dissertation Nets National Award

Scott FendorfScott Fendorf, a recent University of Delaware graduate with a doctorate in soil chemistry, received the Emil Truog Award from the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) for his dissertation. The SSSA presented the award to Fendorf at its annual meeting last November in Cincinnati. Dr. Fendorf had received the Theodore Wolf dissertation prize in the physical life sciences from the University of Delaware earlier last year. The Emil Truog Award is presented by the SSSA to a Ph.D. recipient who has made an outstanding contribution to soil science as evidenced by the Ph.D. thesis. Fendorf's dissertation topic focused on the retention of metal contaminants on soil components. Fendorf is an assistant professor of Soil and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Idaho. Dr. Donald Sparks, who chairs UD's department of plant and soil sciences and was Fendorf's thesis advisor, says, "The Emil Truog award is very competitive and recognizes seminal research contributions to soil science." Fendorf is the second student from the department to receive this honor. Dr. Cristian Schulthess, who also earned his Ph.D. in soil chemistry from Delaware, received the Truog award in 1988. He is currently assistant professor of soil chemistry at the University of Connecticut.
