DEPARTMENT NEWS
Fulbright Fellowship Recipient
A very proud congratulations to our own Ben Aguirre who has received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and study at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales of the Universidad Austral de Chile, in Valdivia, Chile. A specialist in the social science of disasters, Aguirre will be in Chile for four months teaching and also studying Chile's
emergency management system, reputedly the best in Latin America! We are proud of you Ben!!
ASC Young Scholar Award
Aaron Kupchik has won the American Society of Criminology's Young Scholar Award. This is a very coveted honor. Those of you who are unfamiliar to the ASC, this is a truly remarkable achievement for someone who does sociological research on courts. Past winners are invariably someone who does crime causation research/work more rooted in "mainstream" criminology. In five short years, Aaron has distinguished himself as one of the leading independent young scholars in the field. BIG CONGRATULATIONS!
Newly Elected
Dr. Margaret Andersen, Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg
Professor of Sociology has been elected Vice President of the American Sociological Association! Dr. Andersen will assume her office in August of 2008, following a year of service as Vice President-Elect.
UCEA Award
Dr. Lana Harrison's class, "Drugs and the Criminal Justice System: An Inside/Outside Perspective" received an award from the University Continuing Education Association Mid-Atlantic Region in the "Special Populations" category. The award will be given October 3, 2007 at the Region's conference in Harrisbur, PA. Congratulations!

Fall 2007, Dr. Karen Parker and Dr. Chrysanthi Leon. Dr. Parker received her Ph.D. from
North Carolina State University and Dr. Leon received her J.D. and her Ph.D. from
