Computer Skills Growth Chart

Attending: Bruce Bochnowski, Judy Coffield, Mike Epler, Amy Gordon, Mike Kunz, Sandy Falatek, Wendy Modzelewski, Joyce Nerlinger, Lori Roe, Pat Sine

Discussion:

  1. The group accepted the updated chart based on December's meeting and subsequent comments on the list. We'll go back to review items once the other columns are completed.

  2. More items for the preamble were collected:
    • These criteria are to be performed on an independent level
    • Social, ethical and human uses should be addressed throughout the curriculum

  3. There was considerable discussion about just what we meant by all of this. The consensus was that
    • The skills at any grade level are those that we consider the norm for the grade level.
    • The chart is primarily to help teachers plan.
    • The teacher should be able to look at the chart and see what skills came before and what come after. This is very much like knowing that the kids "learned" division last year. The teacher will still have to work with all skill levels but she or he will have an idea of what is considered reasonable expectations.
    • The chart should also give rise to conversations within the schools as to how colleagues can work together to share the responsibility for addressing the skills.

  4. The rest of the meeting was spent hammering out the skills for network and computer use and putting them into a hierarchy. The chart has now been updated with this information.

  5. Mike Epler commented that we need to get input from the curriculum people so that the the computer skills accurately reflect other progress. For example, kids can't be expected to read words in a computer menu if they can't read words anywhere else. The group has been asked to solicit that kind of feedback from their colleagues.

  6. Next time we meet, we'll be working on the Keyboarding and Word Processing Skills portion of the chart. Joyce Nerlinger and Amy Gordon have agreed to look at the research regarding keyboarding.
