Computer Skills Growth Chart

Attending: Karen Bolte, Judy Coffield, Mike Epler, Sandy Falatek, Wendy Modzelewski, Joyce Nerlinger, Charity Phillips, Lori Roe, Denise Tuck, Simone White, Pat Sine

Discussion:

  1. The group began by reviewing the background of the project.

  2. It was discussed and agreed that the categories specified in the draft chart were appropriate and inclusive of the skills needed to fulfill the Delaware Computer Literacy graduation requirement and the NETS for Students.

  3. It was agreed to keep the chart to one page (legal sized if needed). However, the chart will be accompanied by a preamble and may have a glossary or examples as appendices.

  4. Topics were collected as they occured to folks to be included in the preamble. So far they are:
    • comments on the importance of embedding technology skills in the curriculum to support student achievement of the standards
    • a note that teachers who feel their students can go beyond items listed at their grade level should feel free to attempt that

  5. The group generated a list of discrete skills pertaining to e-mail and the Internet and grouped them according to Low (K-3), Middle (4-6), High (7-8) or High School. Many skills were discussed and then eliminated because they were more appropriately covered in a content area (eg. evaluating the information in a Web site or composing a good e-mail message). These are listed below.

  6. E-mail and Internet Skills

    Low (grades K-3)

    • Follow a link
    • Use the browser navigation tools (back, forward, refresh, stop)
    • Use bookmarks to reach teacher-selected sites

    Middle (grades 4-6)

    • Send, reply, forward and cc an email independently
    • Enter a URL to reach a site
    • Search for information using teacher-selected sites
    • Create bookmarks

    High (grades 7-8)

    • Send and read attachments
    • Manage an address book including individuals and groups
    • Save email and organize into folders
    • Search for information using teacher-selected tools, such as Searchopolis or Studyweb
    • Organize bookmarks

    High School

    • Select and use appropriate search tools to find information

  7. The group agree to reflect on the items and attempt to place them into appropriate slots (K-12)

  8. The next meeting is TBA.
