3:45 - 5:15 p.m
Location: District Office
  1. Craig - Online grade books

  2. Joyce - Update on Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair

  3. Craig - District response to spam. The following is from Craig's note of 11/10

    • length of time in receiving outside email...
      • should be within 5 minutes of being sent... unless the Bayesian filter suspects it is SPAM during the software learning period... which ended as of today. During the learning period the possible SPAM went into a holding account, SPAM@avongrove.org  until it was physically read by someone, Marty, John, Tom, me or Sue, and either deleted because it was SPAM or forwarded because it was a "false positive". We were trying to review the "holding area" everyday.

    • how do we identify mail that is not spam, but may be interpreted as spam by the filter....
      • Our software filters through a "whitelist" and "blacklist". The "lists" can be edited manually but mainly the "blacklist" is populated by a database download daily from a site that does research into known spam sites as well as from "subject lines", other indicators and from the Bayesian filter which is based on probabilities. Here is a site describing Bayesian Analysis.  www.bayesian.org/

    • are we still receiving all of our mail...
      • Yes.... unless it is SPAM, which is deleted.

    • how do we notify about mail that is spam ...
      • possible SPAM is forwarded to you by the people listed above from the    spam@avongrove.org    mailbox.... other SPAM is deleted.

    • inability to use the reply feature because the mail has been forwarded....
      • just copy the sender address from the text.

  4. Highlights and questions from monthly reports

    • PLE
      • Learned how to use "Close View" in an iMac for a visually impaired student
      • How do other schools handle teachers' coordination of equipment sign out?
      • How do others schools handle distribution of ink cartridges?
      • How many of ITLTs are supporting the Web Help Desk? Are there a lot of teachers coming to ITLT teachers even though we have Web Help Desk?

    • AGIS
      • held a cybercafe which had poor attendance. Discussed other ways to meet needs of teachers
      • learn how to use fireworks to manipulate digital pictures

    • AGHS
      • Did we hire a new tech for our H.S.?
      • Printer cartridges for English Computer Lab (505) and Room 301 (library's computer lab) - since multiple and departments use the 505 lab, the English department feels that they should not be totally responsible for purchasing the ink cartridges for the printer. In addition the Library's printers are being used by many teachers throughout the building as their primary printer.
