For Parents

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Student Health staff is happy for having the opportunity of providing the primary medical care and health information your son or daughter needs to successfully complete his or her college education. You will see by exploring our pages that we provide many services, including twenty-four hour seven day inpatient and outpatient nursing care during the fall, winter, and spring semesters whenever the residence halls are open (weekday hours during Summer and Spring Break), practitioners and nurse practitioners on-site daily and available by telephone to the nursing staff whenever Student Health is open, a Gynecology Clinic which offers annual exams including Pap smears (thin preps) as well as treatment of many gynecological problems, an Allergy/Immunization Clinic, a Sports Medicine Center which is available to NCAA athletes and to all students by referral from a Student Health practitioner, Nutrition Services, Clinical Lab, X-ray Services (billed to your insurance), and a Dispensary which your son or daughter may elect to use for common pharmaceuticals and orthopedic supplies ordered by a Student Health practitioner. We hope that by being aware of the services offered, you will encourage your son or daughter to use us when needed! You may want to review our page Information About Meningococcal Disease as well as a our page which list prematriculation immunization requirements which has links to our immunization form which lists all required and recommended immunizations.

The SHS is staffed by practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses, technical and support staff - all well trained, fully licensed professionals. The practitioner staffs are Board Certified or Board Eligible in specialty areas that include Adolescent Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Sports Medicine, Pediatrics and Gynecology. The nurse staff includes nurse practitioners and ANA certified college health nurses. SHS practitioners serve on the teaching faculty of the Christiana Care Health Services, Thomas Jefferson University Medical School and Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. The affiliation with the Christiana Care Health Services and Thomas Jefferson University Medical School includes recognition of the Health Service as a primary teaching site for 2nd and 3rd year Resident practitioners in Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Medicine-Pediatrics as well as access to major group buying contracts and continuing education of SHS staff. Whereas Student Health provides many services to your son or daughter, health insurance is still needed to cover services beyond those offered on campus. The University sponsors a sickness and accident insurance plan at a reasonable cost. International students are required to enroll in this plan or an equivalent U.S. based plan. We look forward to serving your student. Stop by and visit us at Laurel Hall, located at the south end of the Green!
