Invitational Science Olympiad Event Clarifications 1/14/02
Specific rules clarifications for an event are available on the National Science Olympiad web site — just click on National Science Olympiad then National Science Olympiad again then Clarifications. Please note that rules clarifications are the decision of the National Science Olympiad officers. These rules clarifications are for the events listed in the manuals. For Trial/Pilot events, changes are made to the actual web site listing. Instead of choosing Clarifications above, choose Trial/Pilot events — these events can be downloaded and are up to date. Please remind your students that they need to check Clarifications and Trial/Pilot event listings frequently.

Here are the specifics particular to the Invitational Science Olympiad at the University of Delaware on January 25/26, 2002:

  1. Our web site schedule of competitive events will be updated on Tuesday, January 22, to include room locations and a corresponding map of campus.
  2. The energy transfer list for both Divisions B and C Mission Possible must be faxed to 302-697-4536 Attention Rob Adams by midnight EST on Tuesday, January 22.
  3. The following software versions are installed in the Divisions B and C Compute This labs:
    • Netscape 4.77
    • Internet Explorer 5.5
    • MS Word 2002 (Office XP)
    • MS Excel 2002 (Office XP)

  1. Divisions B and C will use the Eastern United States bird list for Feathered Frenzy.
  2. Division B will run both Robot Billiards and Robot Maze during the same assigned time period.
  3. For Divisions B and C Wright Stuff and Storming the Castle, Division B Balloon Race, and Division C Cow-A-Bungee, all competitors and spectators will enter the gym/room at the beginning of the period and will not leave until the end of the period so that no doors will be opening unnecessarily. Room dimensions for the following events are:
    • Division C Wright Stuff ROB — Height to ceiling at peak 36’. Height with no obstructions such as lights 22’. Length and width of floor 75’ by 75’. Air circulation to be turned off.
    • Division B Wright Stuff — Height to ceiling at peak 40’. Height with no obstructions such as lights 23’. Length and width of floor 58’ by 53’. Air circulation to be turned off.
    • Divisions B and C Storming the Castle — Height to ceiling peak 40’. Height with no obstructions such as lights or curtain rod 20’. Length and width of floor for each division 29’ by 80’. This will be run indoors.
    • Division B Balloon Race — Ceiling height 12’. Enclosed room only for Balloon Race.

  1. All events with impounded devices should be clearly labelled with the division and team number of the competitor(s). The competitor(s) may have another team member or adult impound his/her device for him/her. All devices must be impounded at the competition site for that event between 7:30 and 8:15 am on Saturday, January 26.
  2. Division B Egg Drop devices will be built during a thirty minute thirty minute time period between 7:30 and 8:15 am on Saturday, January 26. Each competitor will have his/her hand stamped so that the students who build the device are the students who drop the device at competition time. Devices will be impounded at 8:15 am and cannot be modified thereafter. Devices must be clearly labeled with team number.
  3. All competitors must supply their own equipment as stated in the rules. This includes goggles and lab aprons.
  4. Divisions B and C Storming the Castle competitive teams will each have a total of three minutes to make all three shots. There will be a maximum of four minutes set up time before the team will start these three shots. Up to four minute set up time will be consistent for all teams. However, if first group of teams are permitted three minutes, then the set up time will be three minutes for all teams all day. Look at rules, particularly "energy rule" — the device itself cannot contribute energy to the launch, etc. After impounding, no modifications of device will be permitted.
  5. Division B Road Scholar will use a road map and a topographic quadrangle map. These maps will not be Delaware maps in fairness to all teams competing.
  6. Division C Cow-a-Bungee will be no higher than seven meters.
  7. Bottle Rocket is our only outdoor event. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, but if not the event will be cancelled. The current rules do not have an indoor provision as there was years ago.
  8. All students will need to wear their wristband and their nametag to be admitted to events.
  9. Each student must sign in at each event.
  10. Competitive team members or alternates may compete in the Trial/Pilot events. Trial/pilot events earn medals, but do not count in team score.
