Creative Writing: A DREAM STILL ALIVE
- Christine Betz
Thirty-three years ago a great man stood before his people, stating their desperate situation, and offering rays of hope. Martin Luther King. Jr. proclaimed a dream that would rekindle the spirits of mankind, from the moment the forceful words left the lips of the heroic source to the instant they penetrated the ears of the present. Today the dream lies battered, ripped, and suffocated, although it remains alive.
The powerful waves of sovereignty still crash upon the innocent shore of our nation. Upon that shore lies sediment of many forms; though different in appearance, all contribute to the final structure of the surface. The unjust whitecaps do not recognize the importance of each component as they senselessly erode the shore. Instead, the breakers pound upon the Earth, transporting and sorting all forms expecting them to settle where they find themselves dropped.
As seen thirty-three years ago the particles with the most mass and power are gently released unharmed from the roaring current. As seen thirty-three years ago obsidian crystals that have been worn down, over and over, remain whirling about the tumultuous tide. However, the dream of a king echoes through the disturbed water causing promise to glimmer upon the tainted surface of each mineral.
As a result of exterior heat and pressure, diverse grains embrace each other metamorphosing into a united stone. Rocks of granite display their bonds of quartz, feldspar, and biotite minerals; revealing the strength in their fusion. All colors begin to shine in unison.
The hostile sea retreats from the barrier island; seeking those still weak upon the shore. Slowly through time more cohesion shall transpire. As all minerals arrange and combine, one harmonious jetty will arise to protect the weathered coast. As progress ascends the dream will live on.
A ROMANTIC EVENING AT HOME
- Rebecca Merino
Two empty wine glasses glisten in the candlelight
Two empty chairs rest near the lace covered table
Dinner and dancing, intimate thoughts and uninhibited laughter
The Perfect Romantic Evening at home
At home where it is quiet and safe
Two lovers
Too alone
Too scared
Too ashamed
to share their love with a cold world.
