    New Openings in Newark
    Kim Harries & Kim Thomas

The people of Newark, especially the students of the University of Delaware, have probably noticed that there are two new buildings in the area: one which has recently opened and one which will open shortly. These buildings are the Galleria on Main Street and the new student center on South College Avenue. Both of these places will provide opportunities for new experiences.

The University’s new student center is now scheduled to open on April 29th. Having been waiting for this to open since its originally scheduled date of April 1, the students are very anxious to see the inside of the building which they pass every day on their way to classes. Construction has been going on for about two years and finally it is ready to open. The new student center has two floors and is joined with the old Abbey, which was previously a church, on Main Street. The upper level of the building is the lab area for majors such as hotel restaurant management and nutrition. There, cooking labs and satellites will be used to show demonstrations by cooks from all over the world. The lower level is full of many places to eat where flex and points can be used, as well as cash. Various colored signs direct the students to the basic foods such as pizza and pasta. There is also a Taco Bell Express inside and a Gretel’s Pretzel place where students can purchase a different type of food. Also, there is a Chic-fil-a and a Star Spangled Cafe which resembles a little diner. With all of these new choices of food, the new student center is sure to be a hit! In the old Abbey, there is a comfortable new study area. Here, students may spend time studying and typing papers. There are internet connections so students may access the internet while there. Now, students have a new, quiet place where they may go to study. Perhaps the most unique feature of the new student center is its movie theater. Seating between eight and nine hundred people, it will be used instead of Smith Hall for the University’s weekend movies. The new student center is full of many new things for the students of Delaware and all are excited to try it out!

The other opening around campus, the Galleria, is located just above North Central Campus on Main Street. This place is sure to become a hit with students as well as the citizens of Newark. Although still under some construction, many businesses have already opened. Still under construction are Grotto Pizza and its accompanying Blue Hen Sports Bar, and the Brickhouse. Currently open and already popular with students, is Salad Works which has a variety of pasta, salads and sandwiches. Donna’s Delights is open and bringing its old fashioned fudge to the town of Newark. On the second floor, Disc go round, a used CD store, is open. One can walk into the store and sell used CDs or purchase used CDs for low prices. Also on the second level is Brew Ha Ha! This coffee shop features different flavored coffees as well as a wide range of other drinks. One can sit inside or outside on the deck and relax with friends. Probably most well-known from the Galleria is the new Gap. Students as well as residents now do not need to travel to the mall to purchase their Gap clothing, there is one right on Main Street. The Galleria as a whole presents a welcoming atmosphere which is sure to draw much attraction. For some, the Galleria will become a place of employment and for others, a place to eat and relax with friends.

The new student center and the Galleria are sure to be huge hits with students. The wide range of foods will be well appreciated by the students as well as the new places to shop. There is a sense of community given by these two buildings. Students can come together in the student center and may also join with the public in the Galleria. Each provides new opportunities for everyone.

We Could Learn From These Kids
    Marissa Williamson & Stacey Lowe

For our service project we volunteered at the Newark Day Nursery, which is located on Bardsdale Road in Newark. We arrived each Tuesday at approximately 2:00 PM and the excitement began. Who would have ever guessed that two nineteen year olds could learn so much from a group of three year olds? When we arrive the children are just waking from their naps. The next half hour is devoted entirely to going to the bathroom and getting everyone's shoes on. We read stories, play with toys, and push them on the swings. The most important thing we do is talk to these children; the children need attention. With only two teachers it is nearly impossible to provide constant individual attention. That's where we come in. These children consder us their friends. The three hours each week that we spend with these children is very special. Everyday when we are there we learn dozens of new things about ourselves and others. The classroom consists of such a variety of children with different religions, races, and personalities, yet they are all friends. It's amazing to see how well these children get along. It really makes one wonder why things are not like that in the real world.

The majority of people believe that all white people hang out together, all black people hang out together, and so on. This is evident even in many classrooms here at the University of Delaware. However, it is stressed in this classroom that everyone likes everyone else because of who they are, not because of the color of their skin. It is truly amazing how well all of these children get along and respect one another. It seems ironic that grown adults cannot seem to act in the same way. We all say how we must teach our children to do what is right, but maybe it is the children who should be teaching us. Their innocence is what makes them so knowledgeable. If only ther minds were not influenced by their parents or society. We would be very suprised to see the world today if we all acted in such a manner.

It is amusing how people go into a situation expecting to get one thing out of it and get something totally different. We went to this nursery expecting to learn a little bit more about children and how we could handle various situations. Instead, we realized that we should be learning from kids. Sometimes, we all need to step back and watch our children. Children are so much smarter than we think.
