GENERAL INFORMATION

Course Description
The study of sense organs, sensory processes and human perception, including theories and experimental methods.

Required Text:
"SENSATION & PERCEPTION" by E. Bruce Goldstein, 6th Ed. Brooks/Cole.
Look at the web page for this book for additional information, quizzes etc.

Teaching Assistants: Matt Doran (Monday) mdoran@udel.edu, Meghan McAuliffe (Tuesday) meghanmc@udel.edu

Prerequisites:  PSYC 201, PSYC 309.

Laboratories
One purpose of the labs is to give you first-hand experience with perceptual phenomena - as far as possible they will be related to the preceding lectures.  Another purpose is to teach you about experimental methods and data analysis in psychology.  Therefore, we require basic statistics (remember, PSY 309 or equivalent is a prerequisite) and mathematics e.g. drawing and interpreting graphs, algebra, logarithms etc.

Please attend all your scheduled lab classes punctually.  Your TA has the right to exclude you if you come late.  Teaching assistants are not obligated to accommodate those who do not attend their scheduled lab sessions.  Students who have excused absences (supported by documentation) will be given an alternate assignment that will be graded in lieu of the standard lab assignment.  Students may not submit assignments based on data they themselves did not collect.

The lab experiments are to be written up as mini scientific papers. The format, basically APA format, will be explained to you in the guide "How to write a scientific paper."  A sample report is also posted on the web site. Your lab reports must be typed or word-processed and submitted according to your TA's instructions. The penalty for lateness will be a loss of 20% of the possible marks for that report for every day that it is late.
