Research Interests
My primary research interests lie in the interface of social and cross-cultural
psychology, with an emphasis on the role of culture in the development
and maintenance of self-conceptions and perceptions of others. I am particularly
interested in the cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism.
My recent research on the structure of these orientations suggest that
individualism and collectivism are best conceptualized as two rather than
one dimension, and the relationship between individualism and collectivism
varies with both the culture and ingroups involved. My current research
focuses on variations in relationships with ingroups in individualistic
(The Netherlands and U.S.) and collectivistic cultures (China, Hong Kong,
Japan, Korea, and Turkey).
I also conduct research on the effects of multi-cultural experience
on self-concepts, particularly when these cultures differ on individualism
and collectivism. My research focuses on how these cultural orientations
influence independent/interdependent and abstract/contextualized self-conceptions,
especially among Asian Americans.
My second research interests concern the development of social identities,
particularly ethnic and racial identities in African American, Asian American,
and European American children. I am also interested in the role of social
factors, such as perceptions of group status, on the development of racial/ethnic
identity; and the impact of racial/ethnic identity on social behavior and
the development of intergroup attitudes.
