Sending Multimedia E-mail with PODIUM

PODIUM can pack and unpack multimedia e-mail messages that you can send anyone on the Internet with a MIME enabled e-mail package. MIME stands for Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions. MIME is a protocol that lets you attach a file to a mail message. When you send the mail message, the attached file goes along with it. When a user receives the message, the attached file gets decoded and stored on the user’s PC, where the file can function just like it does on your PC.

In order to send or receive multimedia e-mail messages with PODIUM, you must have a MIME compliant e-mail package. If you send a multimedia e-mail message to someone who replies they cannot read it because they do not have a MIME e-mailer, recommend that they purchase a copy of Multimedia Literacy and read the section on Multimedia E-mail, which comes with a freeware copy of Eudora, which is a MIME enabled e-mail package.

Creating a Multimedia E-mail Message

Creating multimedia e-mail with PODIUM is easy, because you use the custom toolbox to compose the message. The tools work just like when you create a multimedia application with PODIUM. Indeed, the only difference between a multimedia application and a multimedia e-mail message is that the e-mail message gets packed into a multimedia e-mail envelope that you can send over the Internet.

After you create your message, you pack it into a PODIUM e-mail envelope that you can send over the Internet.

Sending a Multimedia E-mail Message

You can send a PODIUM e-mail messageto anyone on the Internet with a MIME enabled e-mail package such as Eudora. If you do not know how to use a MIME enabled e-mail package, there is a detailed tutorial in the multimedia e-mail section of the second edition of McGraw-Hill’s Multimedia Literacy (ISBN 0-07-911956-5). The Multiliteracy CD that comes with this text contains a freeware version of Eudora.

Receiving a Multimedia E-mail Message

When you receive multimedia e-mail with a MIME compliant e-mail package such as Eudora, the multimedia attachment gets downloaded to your computer automatically. The headers at the beginning of the mail message will tell you the filename of the .pod file that contains the multimedia e-mail. If you have Eudora Pro, and you have set up Eudora to auto launch PODIUM when a .pod file is received, the multimedia mail message will display automatically. Otherwise, you will need to pull down the PODIUM Files menu and choose Read E-mail to open the e-mail message.
