The Association for Linguistic Typology, in conjunction with the
Universiti Sains Malaysia (Centre for Languages and Translation) and
the University of Delaware (Department of Linguistics), held a
two-day symposium on Malay/Indonesian linguistics, on the 14th and
15th of January 1997, in Penang, Malaysia.
Papers were concerned with the Malay/Indonesian language in all of its varieties. In addition to the standardized versions of Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia, the scope of the symposium included Baba Malay, Bazaar Malay and regional varieties of Malay and Indonesian. Papers represented a variety of fields within linguistics, as well as a diversity of approaches and theoretical persuasions.
