The topic indicates an area that may be emphasized on a cumulative examination and is not a limitation of the topic of an examination.   Topics are broadly defined and may overlap.  Examinations are based on course materials, a specific paper (or papers) from the literature, or any other material the examiner deems appropriate to determine the ability of a student to think independently and integrate the body of physical chemistry knowledge.  However, students should not expect the questions on an examination to be limited to the topics in a corresponding core course.

The principal examiner, at his/her option, may post a more detailed description of the subject of an examination on the departmental bulletin board two weeks before the examination date.  A file of cumulative examinations given by the Division in recent years is available for perusal: http://www.udel.edu/pchem/cumes.pdf.  These are indicative of the kinds of questions that have been asked, but they should not be assumed to be templates for future cumulative examinations.  Students should be prepared to answer questions on any topic broadly connected to physical chemistry.  Interested students are urged to consult the primary examiner about an examination.

A student qualifying in an area other than physical chemistry interested in seeing a cumulative examination to be offered on a date given above should announce that intention to the principal examiner or the Division Secretary (Professor Dybowski) at least two weeks before the examination date.
