CHEM 418 Principles of Physical Chemistry with Applications
to Biochemistry and the Life Sciences I 3
Principles
of physical chemistry with a focus on thermodynamics and molecular
transport; the course emphasizes biochemical thermodynamics, biochemical
equilibria, electrolyte solutions, biological oxidation-reduction
reactions, membranes and transport, sedimentation equilibria, surface
tensions. The course is designed for
BIOC majors.
PREREQ: General chemistry; MATH 241; PHYS 202 or PHYS 207.
RESTRICTIONS: Not acceptable for the B.S. degree in
chemistry. CHEM 418 and CHEM 443
cannot both be counted toward graduation.
CHEM 419 Principles of Physical Chemistry with
Applications to Biochemistry and the Life Sciences II 3
Principles
of physical chemistry with a focus on chemical and enzyme kinetics;
introduction to quantum mechanics and spectroscopy. The course emphasizes applications in
biochemistry and the life sciences.
The course is designed of BIOC majors.
PREREQ: CHEM 418.
RESTRICTIONS: Not acceptable for the B.S. degree in
chemistry. CHEM 419 and CHEM 444
cannot both be counted toward graduation.
CHEM 443 Physical Chemistry I 3
Application
of the principles and methods of physics and mathematics to the
quantitative study of chemistry, principally focusing on thermodynamics.
PREREQ: CHEM 120, or CHEM 220 and CHEM 221; MATH
242 (MATH 243 recommended); PHYS 208 (recommended) or PHYS 202.
RESTRICTIONS: CHEM 418 and CHEM 443 cannot both be
counted toward graduation.

Application
of the principles and methods of physics and mathematics to the
quantitative study of chemistry, focusing on kinetics and quantum
mechanics.
PREREQ: CHEM 120, or CHEM 220 and CHEM 221; MATH
242 (MATH 243 recommended); PHYS 208 (recommended) or PHYS 202.
