Constituent Concerns
Ms. Woodall inquired about the tuition remission benefit being available for parents of employees.  Mr. LaPenta stated that the benefit is not offered to parents because it would be too costly. There are other education benefits available for individuals such as those through The Academy of Lifelong Learning -

Ms. Woodall also asked if career development and training was only available for levels 7 and below.  Mr. Holland stated that there are multiple internship programs for levels 7, 8 and 9.

Mr. DiMauro inquired about the possibility of including informational flyers at new student welcome/orientation or other programs to alert students of the pedestrian traffic issues and concerns near Perkins Student Center.

Mr. Elfers asked if Liberty Mutual Insurance is the best value for university employees.  Mr. Holland told the group that Human Resources may consider rebidding for this program next year.

New Business
Mr. John Warren, Director of Custodial Services in Facilities addressed concerns with the group that custodians are not processing recycling appropriately. He told the group that the custodial staff is directed to put anything that is in a blue container into a clear bag for mainstream recycling; while trash and garbage are to be placed in black bags. These bags are placed outside the buildings for ground services to pick up and process. According to Mr. Warren the custodians attend monthly meetings where they are provided training and receive information to reinforce this program. Additional details are described at the following link He informed the SSAC members that The City of Newark‘s recycling initiative will begin June, 2009. Mr. Warren stated that there are ongoing efforts to have Dining Services get onboard with this program. Mr. Holland will invite a representative from Dining Services to come and speak at the next SSAC meeting to discuss their current efforts and plans with the University’s recycling program. Please contact with additional questions or to address concerns.

Committee Reports/Matters
