Committee Reports

The Faculty Senate Meeting reports for April were presented by Mr. Hendricks

General Faculty Meeting April 20, 2009
President Harker apologized for not having specific announcements about next year’s budget, since it is dependent on the level of state funding which may not be determined until the end of June. He stressed that all previous commitments will be honored, including pay raises, and that priorities will not change, but the pace of implementation may be slowed.

Harker followed by reporting on the Diversity Task Force report and noted that although four broad recommendations are being made, it is a working document and should be seen as a blueprint for enhancing and institutionalizing diversity on campus. The document contains 90 specific recommendations under the four broad themes of building and nurturing a welcoming campus climate; ensuring equity, inclusion and representation; promoting education for a diverse world; and monitoring the future and assuring accountability and institutional vitality. The fourth goal commits the administration to give full support to the recommendations.  To do so, the president has appointed task force members to a new Diversity Action Council chaired by Tom Apple and J.J. Davis.

Diversity Task Force co-chairs Margaret Andersen and Araya Debessay emphasized that the mission of the university includes preparing citizens to live and work in an increasingly diverse world.

Faculty Senate Meeting April 20, 2009
Avron Abraham gave a report on the pilot of the First Year Experience seminar.  It will be fully implemented in the Fall 2009 for all incoming freshman in about 80 sections. Each will be unique since each faculty member will develop the topic, but all students will be required to read Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen and Oliver Relin, a personal account of building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  The goal is to instill a joy of learning and serve as the first step in a path to being global citizens. In addition to the faculty member each class will have a peer mentor to help with transition and coping skills.

Many resolutions were passed including one establishing new breadth requirements. All students must take a minimum of three credits in each of the following areas: creative arts and humanities; history and cultural change; social and behavior sciences; and math, natural sciences and technology.
A lengthy debate preceded the passage of a resolution to approve the merger of the Dept of Geography and the College of Marine and Earth Studies and to change the name to the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

New Business
Ms. DelFattore spoke to the group about the MALS (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies) program.  This program is ideal for mid-career and retired persons.  The program is multi-disciplinary with student ages ranging from 22 to 88.  The program consists of eight courses and a thesis or project at the end.  There are no time restrictions around completion of the program.  Classes generally meet from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. one day a week. Please visit the following web site for additional information about the program
