Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Procedures
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's web-based system where important visa forms and documents (I-20/DS-2019) are created. CGPS uses SEVIS to report and maintain the immigration status of students and exchange visitors while in the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) charges a fee for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors in order to support SEVIS.
Before you apply for your F-1 or J-1 visa for entry into the U.S., you must pay the SEVIS fee. Go to www.fmjfee.com for fee payment requirements.
- For F-1 students (students who have an I-20 form) the fee is US $350.
- For J-1 students/scholars (exchange visitors who have a DS-2019 form) the fee is US $220.
The SEVIS fee must be paid in U.S. dollars and may be paid online. The procedure for paying the fee is as follows:
Access and obtain the fee payment form (I-901) at www.fmjfee.com.
Complete the I-901 form. You must already have received your I-20 or DS-2019 to complete this form.
Pay the SEVIS fee online with a credit card by following the instructions on this form and the website. This payment must be made at least three (3) U.S. government working days before your visa application interview.
After you make your payment, a confirmation message will appear on your computer screen. Print the confirmation message.
Bring the confirmation message (receipt) with you to your visa application interview.

Do not send the I-901 form or payment to the University of Delaware.
Canadian citizens do not need to obtain an F-1 or J-1 visa and should therefore simply present the I-901 fee payment confirmation at the port of entry.
Important: Keep the SEVIS fee payment receipt in your records
You must show the payment confirmation to the consular officer at your visa interview and to the immigration officer upon your arrival to the U.S. at the port of entry (airport or border crossing).
