Dear UD Community,

Earlier today, violent protesters disrupted the counting of Electoral College votes by entering and occupying the U.S. Capitol building. This extreme act far exceeded the boundaries of civil protest, and the University of Delaware joins the vast majority of Americans in condemning this reckless and repugnant attack on the foundation of our democracy.

Our nation values the principles of respect, civility, justice and the rule of law — principles that guide us as we conduct the daily act of self-governance and which are especially crucial during times of political transition. We must never waver from our commitment to the democratic ideals of our country that guard freedom, embrace equality, and pursue peace.

In two weeks, UD alumnus Joseph R. Biden Jr. will be inaugurated as the President of the United States, joined by Kamala Harris as the first female and person of color to hold the office of Vice President. During this moment of change and challenge, all of us — regardless of political differences and personal perspectives — must come together to ensure that the essential work of our democracy continues.

As a community of global citizens and scholars, the University of Delaware is committed to continually building a stronger and more inclusive society, where every voice is heard and where our disagreements are aired and resolved in a peaceful and civil manner. This is a difficult time in our nation, but we must — and we will — remember and respect the common bonds that unite us.

Sincerely,
